Dark Star Orchestra FHGV 100-101

The Firehouse Goldenvoice Series of posters has reached number 100, with the promise of the next 100 posters and a bright future for the series ahead. Many Thanks to David Lefkowitz for commissioning 100 posters for Goldenvoice, and making all this possible.

That’s why this pivotal poster includes numbers 100 and 101 in one piece designed and printed by Chuck Sperry and Dave Hunter.

The band on the poster is Dark Star Orchestra, who recreate the music of the Grateful Dead. Dark Star Orchestra gathers the tribe – really most of the same people, their children and friends –  who inspired The Original psychedelic rock promoter Chet Helms to commission the very first modern rock posters by Stanley Mouse, Wes Wilson, Rick Griffin, Alton Kelley and Victor Moscoso. In fact both of us are permanently influenced by the “Big 5” and their legendary posters.

The venue is the Regency which occupies the very same room –  then called the Avalon Ballroom –  where Mr. Helms promoted the first Grateful Dead shows for his production company, the Family Dog. It seemed appropriate to end the first 100 and begin the next 100 right where it all started.

When we arrived at the show with posters in hand, it was little surprise to see Stanley painting a skeleton with roses in the lobby of the ballroom. He just grinned and complimented us on our work, which was more than a mutual feeling.

The inspiration for the poster is the Grateful Dead song “Sugar Magnolia” with it’s follow through to “Sunshine Daydream.” I’ve watched the Dead perform this song countless times, the more memorable versions at 12:00 midnight at many a new years eve show.

With much respect and appreciation to the roots of the modern rock art poster, and with “next-level” design and printing techniques, Dave Hunter and Chuck Sperry present 100-101 – a psychedelic thank you, a friendly rock and roll IOU to the masters of the past, and a cheerful iridescent / metallic good morning to the future.

The Moonalice gig poster series has been a blast to be involved in. Art directed by poster artist Chris Shaw, this series has grown to include posters by Shaw, Alex Fischer, David Singer, Stanley Mouse, Ron Donovan, Chuck Sperry, Dennis Loren, Claude Shade, Carolyn Ferris and myself. Moonalice is the brainchild of Roger McNamee and band members include McNamee, his wife Ann, Jack Casady, Pete Sears, G.E. Smith, Barry Sless and John Molo. Read About the band Moonalice here.

Given virtually 100% artistic freedom, the Moonalice poster series has been a pleasure to work on, allowing me to explore new design realms, diving deep into the cerebral vortex and adding to the ever growing legend of Moonalice.

I have had the opportunity of creating 7 posters, featured here today. Each poster measures 12.75 X 17.25 and comes signed by me.

(Posters make great presents!)
